Designing Women Thursday: Celebrating birthday Annie Potts with one of Mary Jo’s funniest scenes
The great Annie Potts, who played Mary Jo Shively for all seven seasons of Designing Women, turns 58 today.
She was brilliantly funny from the first episode of this show until the last and her character of Mary Jo grew so much as a person over the run. In the end, Mary Jo was strong and confident and a force to be reckoned with.
But in this episode, which was the show’s pilot, Mary Jo was still a bit raw over her divorce from her womanizing ex-husband, a gynecologist named Ted who was now dating her co-worker Suzanne.
This scene is just a classic as Mary Jo tells the girls about how she tried to be sexy for her ex but, “You can only do so much, with what you have.”
