Defending champ and new mom Serena Williams withdraws from 2018 Australian Open

Women’s professional tennis needs Serena Williams more than ever but it will have to do without her a little longer. Serena, who gave birth to her first child four months ago, announced on Thursday that she would not be playing in the upcoming Australian Open which she has won seven times including last year. Simone Halep, a player who has never won a grand slam singles title, has ascended to the number one ranking but is not dominant. It will be interesting to see who will have the grit and the guts to step up and win the first grand slam tournament of the year. I’m rooting for 37-year-old Venus Williams who last year was runner-up at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the WTA Championships. I’d love to see Venus win one more big title to add to her five Wimbledon crowns and two US Open titles. Below is Serena’s statement announcing her withdrawal.

One Remark

  1. Wouldn’t be surprised if she wins Wimbledon.
