Daytime Emmys: ‘The Talk’ manages to beat perennial winner ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’

The Talk, co-hosted and executive produced by out television personality Sara Gilbert, beat seven-time champion The Ellen DeGeneres Show and others to win its first Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Daytime Entertainment Talk Show.

‘I never thought that an idea that I had in my bathtub seven years ago would end up (with) us up here,’ Gilbert said as she read her speech from her phone onstage at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday.

‘I think it was just an alchemy that brought us together. … I wanted everyone to feel more connected.’

Flanked by co-hosts Julie Chen, Aisha Tyler, Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood, Gilbert said backstage that they would have to split the Emmy five ways.

Technically she was the only Emmy winner of the five since she is an executive producer.

The show not only beat perennial winner Ellen DeGeneres but also The View, The Real, and The Wendy Williams Show.

On today’s episode of The Talk, Gilbert said the win came as a total surprise.

‘People ask if we were expecting to win. We were so shocked. I would have learned my speech – that’s proof that we had no idea.’

The ladies lost in the Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show host category to Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan for Live With Kelly and Micheal.

Neither Ripa or Strahan were present for the ceremony which was not televised this year.

Their win comes just as it was announced that Straham is leaving that program and Ripa’s being left out of the loop led to a public spat with executives.

Very surprising… me thinks this has to do with Julie Chen’s husband being a very powerful man at CBS. Who really votes for these talk shows? Out of all the nominees this show is the most silly, judgemental and boring out of all of them. Sharon is one of the worst hosts on any American Talk show. Julie and Sara are incredible and Aisha is the voice of reason but Sharon and Sheryl add nothing to this talker.

I’m very happy for Sara Gilbert. I’ve always liked her and found her more real than most. All five of these woman seemed to have good chemistry together. Julie Chen is my favorite on the “The Talk”.
