Darren Criss on becoming Hedwig: “The first time I put on the makeup, you immediately become this sassy bitch”

Darren Criss is counting down the days until he takes over the title role in the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

The Glee alum talked to Playbill about the transformation that takes place to get into his transgender punk rocker character.

“The first time I put on the makeup, you immediately become this sassy bitch because you just look at yourself and go, “Oh! Who is that?!” It really changes the way you see yourself and, as a result, how you interact with other people. I was like, “Mama look good! Mama look real pretty!” But, it has very little to do with me and everything to do with the magic of drag and contouring and all the tricks of the drag trade for hundreds of years on the stage.

“The physicality of Hedwig is very much augmented and helped out by when you put on the makeup and the wigs and the outfits. I don’t care who you are — you put on a pair of heels, you’re going to hold yourself differently. It immediately empowers one’s physique.”

One Remark

  1. It sure is hard for me to believe that Darren is straight. Its nice that the younger generation is so open about their fluidity with sexual identity. It would be interesting to know Darren, to see if he is as fluid in real life as he sounds in interviews.
