Darren Criss is Broadway’s next Hedwig!

This sounds like a very good idea.

Darren Criss has been tapped as the next star to play the title character in the Broadway hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

It was announced today that the Glee star will replace John Cameron Mitchell beginning April 29 for a limited 12-week run at the Belasco Theatre in New York City.

Criss will be the latest in a growing list of high-profile performers to tackle the role of a transgender punk rock singer who is the victim of a botched sex-change operation.

He steps in to platform high heels previously worn by Neil Patrick Harris who won a Tony Award last year for his performance.

Since Harris left the show last summer, the role of Hedwig has been played by Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and John Cameron Mitchell who wrote the book for the show.

Mitchell co-created the role of Hedwig, debuted it Off-Broadway in 1998 and later starred in a 2001 feature film.

;I’ve got a grin plastered on my face that Darren is joining the brotherhood of Hedwigs,’ Mitchell said in a statement. ‘His stage presence is electrifying, his rock and roll credentials and comic timing impeccable and I’m thrilled to be working with him to create a brand-new Hedwig.’

Criss last appeared on Broadway when he replaced Daniel Radcliffe in 2012 in the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Below are some of Glee musical numbers performed by Criss.
