Dame Elizabeth Taylor weeps at sight of a bust of Richard Burton

Dame Elizabeth Taylor had an emotional evening at Buckingham Palace Thursday at a gala to mark the 60th anniversary of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

It was announced at the gala that a bronze bust of her great love, Richard Burton, will be donated to the college in Cardiff, while its new theatre will be named after him.

Dame Elizabeth, 78, presented the bust to the Prince of Wales and said: “Richard would have been so deeply touched by this great honor, as am I. It’s wonderful to be here and join in this celebration, along with many others who remember and respect Richard with so much love in their hearts.”

When the Prince asked her whether she thought it was a good likeness of Burton, she burst into tears and finally replied: “Marvellous.”

Burton, who died in 1984, was Miss Taylor’s fifth and sixth husband. They met on the set of Cleopatra in the early 60s and began a scandalous affair. They married in 1964 and went on to star in a series of movies including Taming of the Shrew, The Sandpiper, The VIPs, Boom! and most famously, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

They divorced in 1974, remarried in 1975 then split up again for good. But they remained close and reunited professionally on Broadway, London’s West End and a national tour of the play Private Lives in 1983.

Dame Elizabeth is in London working on her new fragrance, Violet Eyes, which is out on Mother’s Day, May 9.

One Remark

  1. OMG! Who photoshopped the first pic???

Enough untouched photos of Liz have surfaced of the last decade. I think we’re all ready to accept that she (and we) are getting older. Or maybe not.
