Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have been chosen to produce the 2013 Academy Awards

Two gay men producing the Academy Awards?

How perfect! Especially when those men are the fabulous Craig Zaden and Neil Meron. Now all we need is a gay host like, say, Neil Patrick Harris!

I think this means the Oscars will be done right and the musical entertainment should be first-rate since this is the team that produced the feature film versions of Hairspray, Footloose and Chicago as well as TV’s Smash and Broadway’s most recent revivals of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Promises, Promises.

This will be the duo’s first involvement with the Oscars. The 85th Academy Awards will air live on Sunday, February 24, 2013.

“We are very excited to collaborate with Hawk and everyone at the Academy to produce this year’s Oscars,” Zadan and Meron said in a statement. “We hope to utilize our experience in producing features, TV and theater to bring something fresh and special to this incredible awards show. When we filmed ‘The Bucket List,’ we made our own personal bucket list, and producing the Oscars was #1. It’s truly a great honor.”

GLAAD President Herndon Graddick is sure happy about their selection and said in a statement: “For decades, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have been fearless in bringing powerful and entertaining stories to screens, and will undoubtedly bring that same level of passion and skill for storytelling to the Oscars.”
