Constance McMillen is going to The White House
I wonder what all those bigoted parents and kids back at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi who kept Constance McMillen from bringing her girlfriend to the prom will be doing tomorrow.
Whatever they are doing, I can guarantee it will not be as exciting as what is on tap for Constance: will attend a White House reception Tuesday for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens from around the nation in recognition of gay pride month.
The reception will be hosted by President Barack Obama who will deliver some brief remarks.
Then Constance goes to New York where will first attend a benefit concert with the legendary Ronnie Spector then she will serve as a grand marshal in this weekend’s New York City gay pride parade.
“I’ll never get my senior year back,” Constance said to USA Today. “But the experiences that I have had because of this have really made it a lot easier. It has really helped me.”
Although a judge agreed that Constance’s constitutional rights had been violated when they canceled the prom rather than let her attend with a female, the school was not forced to hold an official prom and instead organized a private event leaving Constance out in the cold.
