“Company” concert starring Neil Patrick Harris, Patti LuPone and others will get a DVD release is delightful news: The director of last year’s New York Philharmonic concert staging of Company tells that the show, which starred Neil Patrick Harris, Patti LuPone and Stephen Colbert among others will be released on DVD.

“It will for sure happen,” director Lonny Price confirmed.

Price said negotiations are currently underway but a timeline for the DVD release has not been set.

It was back in April that an all-star cast joined the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center for four concert performances of the classic Stephen Sondheim musical.

The musical is about a 35-year-old bachelor named Bobby (played by Harris) and the “good and crazy people” who are his married friends. The all-star cast includes LuPone who sings the boozy show-stopping Ladies Who Lunch number, Colbert, Jon Cryer, Christina Hendricks, Martha Plimpton, Anika Noni Rose and Aaron Lazar.

The production had a very limited theatrical release in June – so limited that I was not able to see it – so a DVD is most welcome! Once a release date is set, you can be sure I’ll let you know!

  1. Greg, I could have SWORN I read where you got to see the theatrical release; I was surprised to read that you didn’t. I didn’t think I’d get the chance to see it, but lo and behold it was shown once a day for a week at one of the big multi-plexes here (ABQ). I caught one show and it was great! So glad to hear it will be on DVD — hopefully soon! It really is a great production with an amazing cast, many of whom I didn’t even know could sing! (Everyone has great stage presence.)

I saw it live last April at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC. I want to buy the DVD when it comes out. Patti LuPone and Aniki Noni Rose are excellent. Please let us know as soon as it becomes available.
