Coach Bieste is set to return to “Glee” next week – check out his new look
Glee fans learned last month that William McKinley High School’s football coach Beiste is transitioning from female to male.
On the February 13 episode of the show – now in its sixth and final season – Beiste will unveil his new look.
Emmy nominated Dot-Marie Jones, who portrays Beiste, admits she initially had some reservations about the character’s transition.
‘I just didn’t want to let down the girls who are straight and tomboys that my character represented the last four seasons,’ Jones tells People.com.
‘But I got the script and I was, like, “Oh my God. This is amazing.”‘
In a recent episode (see video below), Beiste shared with school principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and assistant football coach Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) that he has gender dysphoria – the formal diagnosis used by psychologists and physicians to describe people who identify as transgender.
‘I’ve felt like this my whole life. Growing up I was really confused – I thought I was just a tomboy,’ Beiste said. ‘No matter what I did, I never felt at home in my own skin. I never felt like my body matched who I was in the inside.’
The coach added: ‘I’ve got to do this for my own peace of mind, I’ve got to get my body in alignment with how I see myself.’
