CNN’s Showbiz Tonight runs insulting poll: “Is the surge in gay TV characters bad for society?” [Updated]

http://a.abcnews.com/images/GMA/abc_gma_modern_family_091205_mn.jpgThis is something I’d expect to see on maybe Fox News if anywhere, not on CNN which should know better: Towleroad.com reports that CNN’s Showbiz Tonight conducted a poll asking: Is the surge in TV gay characters bad for society?

Are you kidding me? And even scarier are that 44 percent of the respondents said: “Yes.”

Why not just go ahead and ask: Are gays bad for society? Really that’s what they are asking anyway.

This kind if thing is so infuriating especially with today being World Suicide Prevention Day. Far too many gay kids kill themselves or want to kill themselves because of the attitudes of that 44 percent who said yes – some of whom are parents of gay kids.

Thank GOD we have shows like Glee where a gay kid like Kurt has a supportive and loving father and shows like Modern Family where a gay couple are raising a child and as normal a part of their family and neighborhood as anyone else.

It makes me wonder if CNN’s Showbiz Tonight has a gay person on staff who might have been able to say, “You know what guys, that poll is so inappropriate.” This is why I made my point a few days ago about newsroom diversity and why it is so great to have an out newsman like Thomas Roberts working at MSNBC.

We have to expect better from a major news organization like CNN and I expect GLAAD to get on their case immediately over this. There should be an on-air apology to all gays and their straight allies. This kind of thing is ridiculous in this day and age.

UPDATE: CNN has removed the offensive poll at the urging of GLAAD. See details HERE

8 Remarks

  1. Cable “news” is just “reality TV” without the winks and nudges. Yes, the poll is infuriating, insulting and inane. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stand out as unusual in the cesspool surrounding it.

  2. Thanks Greg, for pointing out this irresponsibly horrible CNN brain fart!

  3. GLAAD posted on their blog that CNN agreed and took the offensive poll down:

  4. How silly is that question, but, if its on CNN, it seems to be why they are the third rate cable news group that I never watch, it ranks right up there with Fox News as totally useless for thosw of us who live in the real world. But maybe they should have asked the gays that work for them what they think…..

  5. One of the things I noted about the widespread homophobic attitudes of some bigots is that they feel overconfident when they see others like them pushing in the same direction. Like, they feel secure on masse; they can’t stand spiting hate when being alone or in a minority group. They take cover on the notion that they still represent some general sense of majority, they love that, as their ideas can not stand hard logic or reasoning. That’s why they like to group themselves in action bands to show that they could appear to be more than they are actually are.
In Argentina they tried this tactic to oppose same sex marriage, dragging masses of evangelist to protest in front of the Congress to show that they are big numbers even if they are actually small numbers when compared to the rest of the country.
These polls encourage the vision that says: ultimately it is a question of opinion that you are entitled to, it is not wrong if we can count enough numbers on our side. Even if the judges are ruling over and over again that discrimination is wrong and baseless and contrary to what is expressing in the Constitution so far.
    What a pity.

  6. I have to agree it was insulting. The SHOWBIZ TODAY show always has a segment “with talking heads” after each segment. I watch the show daily but I was pissed at this story I wanted them stay the truth about gay characters. For every gay character there is 20 straight characters.

  7. Mark your words speak true. Cable “news” left the building a long time ago.

  8. I am SO glad to see more gay characters on mainstream TV these days! The only way to conquer fear (i.e. homophobia) is through education and exposure. If the world is able to see that gay people are NO different, and that the “gay agenda” consists of the human desire to love and be loved and the freedom to be yourself, then gay suddenly doesn’t seem so scary, now does it?! And for those who think that it’s a danger to our society to portray these characters as “normal”, I encourage you to think about how damaging it is to dehumanize individuals for how they were made and force them to live a closeted of self-hatred. If you have any sense of empathy and/or hope for peace among humanity, you will take a step back and see that we are not so different after all.
