Clay Aiken is running for for seat in US Congress!
Clay Aiken may have been the runner-up on American Idol then the runner-up on Celebrity Apprentice, but he’s hoping for a first-place finish that will land him in Washington DC.
Clay announced today that he is running for a seat in the US Congress.
‘I’m not a politician,’ he says in a video on his campaign website. ‘I don’t ever want to be one.’
The 35-year-old single dad hopes to unseat Tea Party Republican favorite Renee Ellmers in North Carolina’s conservative 2nd congressional district.
He must first prevail in a Democratic primary in order to face Ellmers who Clay says had hurt people in her state by repeatedly voting to shut down the federal government 21 times and voting to cut military spending 1o times.
‘And then she complained that she needed her paycheck,’ Aiken remarked. ‘These votes hurt North Carolina.’
He portrays the incumbent as someone who does what her party leaders tell her to do regardless of the impact on constituents back home.
‘This is what’s wrong with Washington. That a congresswoman would go there and vote against the interests of North Carolina military families and those who depend on the military for their jobs,’ he says in the video. ‘To do it when you know it’s wrong is even worse.’
Ellmers made light of a possible Aiken candidacy last week in a radio interview saying: ‘Apparently his performing career is not going so well and he’s very bored.’
Aiken is one of the most successful alums in the history of American Idol.
In addition to successful albums and concert tours, he also appeared on Broadway in the musical Spamalot.
