Cher chats ABBA with “Attitude”

Cher is on the cover of Attitude and has done an interview with the magazine.

Her high-camp persona and outspoken support of LGBT equality has ensured her bond with gay men has remained resolute for almost six decades, but the singer says she didn’t intend for Dancing Queen – due for release on September 28 – to be her campest contribution to music yet.

“In my mind it wasn’t [camp]” she tells us. “Honestly! I didn’t mean it to be camp!

“I’m happy if whoever wants to think of it as that, if it makes them happy I’m pleased. But I didn’t mean it to be camp at all. I just thought it to be either fun or a little bit heart-breaking.”

The Empress of Pop, who has already unveiled tracks from the album including ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’ and ‘SOS’ goes on: “ABBA songs are a lot harder to sing than one might imagine. They’re much more intricate, they’re much more substantive. I think that people love ABBA, but I’m not so sure they appreciate them on a musical level. I don’t think they ask themselves, ‘Why am I loving this?’”
