Celebrating Doris Day born 100 years ago today

Thinking of movie legend Doris Day who was born 100 years ago today.

The great star died in 2019 just six weeks after her 97th birthday. She had been in excellent physical health for her age, until contracting a serious case of pneumonia which resulted in her death.

It had been a nice, long life for one of the biggest movie stars of the 1940s, 50s and 60s (Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk, The Pajama Game, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Lullaby of Broadway), a huge TV star in the 70s (The Doris Day Show) and a huge recording star (Secret Love, Que Sera, Sera).

She all but retired from showbiz in the mid-70s but did re-emerge in the 80s to host the show Doris Day and Friends and in 1989 was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Award at the Golden Globe Awards. Miss Day also received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2006. No doubt she would’ve receive an honorary Academy Award for her film career if she had agreed to attend the ceremony.

We didn’t often see Miss Day in public anymore but she seemed to be having a happy life in Carmel where she had lived for many years.

Here are some reminders of her wonderful talents:

One Remark

Always thought it was fun that Day and Brando shared a birthday!
Doris teamed with Hollywood’s King, Clark Gable, in 1958′s comedy, “Teacher’s Pet.” A smart newspaper rom-com, with Day as journalism teacher & Gable as old-school editor, who spar, then spark. The next year’s “Pillow Talk” borrowed a bit from this plot! My take on this teacher: https://ricksrealreel.blogspot.com/2022/04/teachers-pet-1958.html
