Rest In Heavenly Peace Carol Channing. I’m so glad I got to know you briefly on and off the stage. There will never be another . She took everything that was unique, outrageous and absolutely bananas in herself and had the audacity to put it all center stage. Nothing about her – her voice, her height , her manner made any conventional sense and that made her a star. You know you’re a global phenomenon when EVERYONE can do an impression of you. She taught me there’s NO power in diminishing yourself in order to fit in. Towards the end her body wouldn’t let her do what she wanted it to do , but when we passed each other at events and fundraisers she’d give me a look that let me know she was still in there and in on the joke. She believed passionately that arts education was as essential to children as academics. She called art “fertilizer on the brain” -that art not only enhanced one’s intelligence it increased it. I count myself lucky to have spent time with her spirit . BE YOURSELF. And if you can’t , BE CAROL CHANNING. #carolchanning #icon #legend #iconoclast #star #broadway #gayicon
