Just had a chat with Chandler Massey about his Emmy nomination for Days of Our Lives and he was as humble and thoughtful as ever.

Chandler (pictured with me last year at a Paley Center event) has been doing superb work as Will Horton on Days for more than two years now and is the reason why I started watching the show in the first place.

His coming out story last year was emotional and gripping and the episode that got him his third Emmy nod was one in which Will kisses another guy for the first time then goes to his grandmother Marlena (Deidre Hall) for a heart-to-heart.

‘Just getting nominated is an honor,’ Chandler told me. ‘It’s really nice, it’s very gratifying and humbling to get this respect from your peers. But I’m not doing it for the awards, I’m doing it for the story and for the character.’

‘The exciting thing about this time is that Freddie is nominated too. That’s a huge bonus.’

That would be Freddie Smith who plays Will’s boyfriend Sonny Kiriakis, a character that had been in the background for too long but has emerged strongly in the past six months.

“I think it’s always getting better – specifically the scenes between Freddie and me,” Chandler says. “We have such an organic rapport between the two of us. The foundation of that is we both know we are working to make the scene as good as it can possibly be. That allows us to really trust each other. The bond only gets stronger between the two of us and the bond between Will and Sonny only gets stronger and deeper.”

The storyline currently has Will’s ex-girlfriend Gabi about a month away from giving birth to their child with her husband, Nick Fallon, an oppressive and homophobic presence.

“My favorite scenes are definitely ahead – the stuff that hasn’t aired yet,” Chandler says. “Will and Gabi will find themselves in an almost sitcom type relationship and it makes for interesting, funny and heartfelt scenes – really good stuff.”

I should be having a brief phone chat with Chandler Massey shortly about earning his third consecutive Daytime Emmy nomination!

Chandler, who won last year, is once again in contention in the Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Will Horton on Days of Our Lives.

Among his competitors is onscreen boyfriend Freddie Smith!

Freddie has received his first nomination as Sonny Kiriakis and it’s nice to see him getting some recognition as he’s been given more screen time.

Congratulations to both!

Their Emmy competition is a pair of actors from the CBS soap The Young and the Restless: Max Ehrich and Bryton James.

I’ll have more Daytime Emmy news soon!

First of all, I’m thrilled to see that AIDS activist and The Normal Heart playwright Larry Kramer will be presented with the Isabelle Stevenson Award.

This is an award given to a theater artist who has “made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service, or charitable organizations, regardless of whether such organizations relate to the theater.”

Harvey Fierstein, David Hyde Pierce and Nathan Lane, all previous Tony winners – and openly gay – were all nominated for Tony Awards on Tuesday.

Lane and Hyde Pierce are competing against each other for Best Actor in a Play for The Nance and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, respectively. Their competition consists of Tom Hanks for Lucky Guy, Tracy Letts for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Tom Sturridge for Orphans.

Fierstein’s nod came in the category of Best Book of a Musical for Kinky Boots which earned a leading 13 nominations in all including one for prominent LGBT ally Cyndi Lauper for best original score.

Kinky Boots, also nominated for best musical, tells the story of a shoe manufacturer who revitalizes his business by catering to drag performers.

Another well-known straight ally to the LGBT community nominated was Judith Light in the featured actress in a play category for her performance in The Assembled Party.

After a 30-plus years television career that included two Daytime Emmys for One Life to Live, eight seasons starring in Who’s the Boss and four years as a cast member on Ugly Betty, Light has been taking Broadway by storm in recent years.

She won a Tony last year as featured actress for Other Desert Cities and was nominated in the category in 2011 for Lombardi.

Here is a LINK to the full list on Tony nominees. The awards will be handed out on June 9.

Betty White, 91, appeared on stage at the JW Marriot at LA Live with young movie hunk Alex Pettyfer to raise money by auctioning off a kiss.

The bidding started at $5,000 to smooch White before Cloris Leachman, her co-star on the classic TV series The Mary Tyler Moore Show, won with a bid of $8,000.

Leachman, 86, jokingly tried to slip White the tongue as the two exchanged kisses on the cheek. Much for heated was the kiss White shared with Pettyfer for a bid of $6,100.

The Hot in Cleveland star also stated her support of marriage equality indicating she had no patience for ‘all the judgmental people.’

‘If two people want to get married then let them get married!” White said to applause. ‘Mind your own business and don’t worry about it!”

Clinton did not mention in his speech that he was the one who signed DOMA into law but he made clear how he feels about it today: ‘I want to keep working on this until not only DOMA is no longer the law of the land, but until all people, no matter where they live, can marry the people they love. I believe you will win the DOMA fight, and I think you will win the constitutional right to marry. If not tomorrow, then the next day or the next day.’

Clinton was introduced by movie honcho Harvey Weinstein and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence who managed, adorably, to mangle Clinton’s name a bit. After his speech, Chelsea Clinton made a surprise appearance to present her dad with the actual award.

While it was he who received the Agent of Change Award, Clinton said the staff of GLAAD and other LGBT activists were the true agents of change.

‘You have made this a better, a more interesting and a more well-prepared country for the future’

This just in: GLAAD has announced that President Bill Clinton will receive the Advocate for Change Award at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles.

The award is certain to be controversial to some since it was Clinton who signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law in 1996 as well as the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy in 1993.

But GLAAD points out that in 2011, Clinton advocated for marriage equality in New York.

He stated that “for more than a century, our Statue of Liberty has welcomed all kinds of people from all over the world yearning to be free. In the 21st century, I believe New York’s welcome must include marriage equality.”

In 2012, he joined the Coalition to Protect North Carolina Families in working against North Carolina’s proposed Amendment One to ban marriage and civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. Most recently, he called for the Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act in an op-ed for The Washington Post.

GLAAD’s Wilson Cruz says of Clinton: “President Clinton’s support of the LGBT community and recognition that DOMA, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional and should be struck down shows that the political landscape continues to change in favor of LGBT equality. Leaders and allies like President Clinton are critical to moving our march for equality forward.”

GLAAD also points out that during his administration, Clinton became the first U.S. President to appoint out gay and lesbian people to all levels of government. He appointed more than 150 including James Hormel as America’s first openly gay ambassador. During the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, his administration convened the first White House Conference on the epidemic, created the national AIDS Policy Coordinator post, and expanded funding for research. In 2002, his Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) began as the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in the developing world.

Some were still feeling the sting from when Ratner was asked after a screening in November 2011 whether he rehearses with his actors before shooting a scene.

He replied inexplicably: ‘Rehearsing is for faggots.’

The backlash was so great that resigned, under pressure, from producing the 2012 Oscars.

But Ratner has turned it around working with GLAAD on a ‘Come Out for Equality’ public service announcement series. It features a diverse group of Hollywood celebrities, athletes, musicians and politicians ‘coming out of the closet’ as supporters of equality.

“I learned a valuable lesson: a word can matter, whether it’s said with malice or as a joke,” Ratner said during his acceptance speech on Saturday. “In my life, I spend a lot of time searching deep into my heart for what my true values and beliefs are, and I know that I have love in my heart for everyone. But it doesn’t count for much if it helps to perpetuate and validate the people out there that are truly bigoted and hateful.”

Below is video of his acceptance speech which is funny and seems heartfelt.

Last night I posted the full presentation of Madonna presenting Anderson Cooper with GLAAD’s Vito Russo Award. But this post is all about Anderson and not Madonna whose presentation took up more than twice the amount of time of Cooper’s speech.

I want to put the focus here just on Anderson and the portion of his speech where he uses his moment in the spotlight to shine light on some of the true heroes of the LGBT movement.

He called it “an incredible honor” to receive an award named in honor of Vito Russo, the LGBT activist, film historian and author who is best remembered as the author of the book The Celluloid Closet and subject of the HBO documentary film Vito.

“The truth is that I know I’m not worthy of it at all. I read The Celluloid Closet when I was in high school and it opened my eyes to the way the movies and the media for generations portrayed us and how those fair and inaccurate portrayals affected us all. Vito Russo was a hero. Hero as was Harry Hay and Frank Kameny, Audre Lorde, Sylvia Rivera. A hero is Larry Kramer and Peter Staley – and I am very happy that Peter is here tonight. A hero as was Randy Shilts and Spencer Cox who sadly are not here tonight. I know that I am only here tonight because I benefited from what they and so many others have done. What they have spoken up for, stood up for, been arrested and fired for and been beaten and bloodied and bruised for.”

“I’m only here because others have done so much more than I will ever be able to do.”

“As a gay person, it’s important for me to remember that all of us come from a community whose stories have for too long been forgotten or ignored. A community whose lives have for too long been ridiculed or misrepresented. A community that in spite of all of that, has found ways to love and to laugh and to care for one another. A community that has found ways to stand up and to stand tall and make ourselves visible.”

“I’ve only been able to be on this stage because of generations of people who have come before.”

Well said Anderson!

“Listen, I want to do good for the community,” she said. “But most importantly, I know how to scout for boys.”

“I used to be a Girl Scout,” Madonna added. “But I got kicked out. Do you want to know why? Because my skirt was too short, and I never sold enough cookies — I ate the cookies.”

Cooper took the stage and began by saying: “Do you know what it’s like being the follow-up to Madonna? It’s not easy. I want to thank Madonna for being here tonight. For her entire career she has been outspoken for gay lesbian bisexual and transgender people not only here but throughout the world. She’s been an extraordinary ally and I’m so thankful for her artistry and for her friendship.”

He also got personal: “I’ve had so many blessings in my life, and being gay is certainly one of the greatest blessings. It has allowed me to love and to be loved and to help open my head and my heart in ways I could never have predicted. The ability to love one another, the ability to love another person is, in my opinion, one of God’s greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life – my family, and my friends, and my partner Benjamin. Thank you very much, and thank you for being here.”

If you’ve seen The Perks of Being a Wallflower (if not, you must!) then you already know what a phenomenal actor Ezra Miller is.

He plays a gay high school student who is eccentric and happy – until he gets his heart really broken.

Miller, who is openly gay in real life, is so superb and I’m glad to see that he has been nominated for an MTV Movie Award in the category Breakthrough Performance.

His competition is: Eddie Redmayne (Les Misérables); Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi); Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) and Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect).

I’ve covered the MTV Movie Awards several times and yes, they are star-studded, but they are silly.

The categories can be ridiculous! This year they include ‘Best Scared As Shit Performance’ and ‘Best WTF Moment.’

You also have a Best Male Performance category that includes Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis and fellow Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper.

Then you have Ben Affleck, of course, who has basically won every award in sight since he was snubbed for a best director Oscar nod. The fourth nominee is Jamie Foxx for Django Unchained. So who does the fifth slot go to you wonder? Why Channing Tatum for Magic Mike!

A category more fitting for Tatum is Best Shirtless Performance and yup, that’s a real category and he is nominated. His competition is mostly pretty stellar: Christian Bale (The Dark Knight Rises); Daniel Craig (Skyfall) and Taylor Lautner (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2). Oh wait! There’s one more! Seth MacFarlane as Ted in Ted.

The awards will be handed out on April 14 and be hosted by Rebel Wilson who has been nominated in three categories.

Here is a LINK to the full list of nominations.

Anderson Cooper was really cute today on his daytime show as he talked about Madonna being set to present him with the Vito Russo Award later this month at the GLAAD Media Awards.

‘I’m incredibly excited,’ he said to guest co-host Lisa Rinna. ‘Madonna? Are you kidding me? I sort of don’t believe it’s true. … I can’t believe she’s actually going to come and hand me an award.’

‘I went to see three of her concerts this past tour,’ he admitted to his audience. ‘I’m like the oldest groupie in the world.’

Okay, now the not so cute part of this Madonna presenting Anderson with an award story.

A group of Lady Gaga fans have decided they are so upset that Madonna was chosen to present and not Gaga, they decided to smear Madonna’s name in the most vicious but also ridiculous way.

etter to GLAAD calling the selection of Madonna to present Cooper with the award ‘an insult to a true gay rights activist like Lady Gaga.’

Then the group makes this claim: ‘Madonna is one of the major reasons for AIDS. Back in the 1980’s, she encouraged gay men to have unprotected sex. While she certainly didn’t start the disease, she and her lack of morals helped it spread.’

They added: ‘Please rethink your choice of having Madonna as a presenter. If you don’t, we Little Monsters will strike back in a way you won’t like.’

The littlemonsterartpop blog on which the letter originally appeared has been removed and can no longer be accessed.

Madonna has supported several AIDS organizations over the years and in 2008 was honored for the second by the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR). She was first honored by AmFAR back in 1991.

The whole thing is just shameful and, I’m sure, Gaga is mortified that some of her ‘fans’ could be so misguided.

Okay, we all knew that Argo was going to win the Oscar tonight for best picture – but we sure didn’t know that First Lady Michelle Obama was going to announce it as the winner!

THAT was cool.

Ben Affleck being ridiculously robbed of a best director nomination was the best thing that could have happened because it made the movie an underdog. And I have no problem with that because I saw a lot of movies last year – including Lincoln, Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook – and Argo was firmly my favorite.

Affleck was sweet in his speech as he reflected on all that had happened since his first Oscar win back in 1998 for screenwriting. He and pal Matt Damon wrote Good Will Hunting and went on to become huge movie stars.

Affleck starred in commercial hits like Pearl Harbor, Daredevil and The Sum of All Fears but then had a string of critically-panned flops like Surviving Christmas and especially Gigli.

“I was here 15 years ago. I had no idea what I was doing,” he said in his Oscar speech.”I never thought I would be back here, but I am, because of so many of you.”

He spoke of his falling down but added: “All that matters is that you gotta get up.”

It seemed fitting that Daniel Day-Lewis would be presented with a record third best actor Oscar from Meryl Streep who became a three-time winner herself last year.

When I saw him in Lincoln, I knew he’d win because he was just that good. I don’t think there’s ever been such a heavy favorite in the category before. What he accomplished was extraordinary.

‘I do know that I have received so much more than my fair share of good fortune,’ he said in his speech.

Day-Lewis, who previously won for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood, joins Streep, Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Brennan as a three-time winner but each of the others have supporting actor wins in their total.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if either Day-Lewis or Streep were to one day match the record four Oscars won by Katherine Hepburn.

Speaking of best actress, 22-year-old Jennifer Lawrence became the second-youngest winner in Oscar history when she took home the Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook.

It was a well-deserved win against tough competition.

I don’t remember much of what she said in her speech because I was still recovering from the fact that she fell down on the steps leading up to the stage. But it was amazing at how fast and how well she recovered as the audience gave her a standing ovation.

“Thank you, you guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell. And that’s really embarrassing,” she said.

It was nice to see Ang Lee win his second directing Oscar. The first was in 2007 for Brokeback Mountain and tonight’s win was for Life of Pi. He benefited by Affleck’s absence in the category but there were many, including me, who thought Steven Spielberg would win for Lincoln.

Christoph Waltz won his second supporting actor Oscar over a stellar field of past Oscar winners. I thought Tommy Lee Jones would take it for Lincoln which was shut out in the major categories.

And rounding up the acting winners was the heavy favorite Anne Hathaway who has won so many awards that people were getting a little sick of her acting so astonished each time. She toned that down this time by just saying, ‘It came true.’

It was also sweet when she said: “My husband, by far and away the greatest moment of my life is the one when you walked into it. I love you so much. Here’s hoping someday in the not-too-distant future the misfortunes of Fantine will be only found in fiction and not in real life.”

It was great to see Adele become an Oscar winner when she took home the Oscar for best original song for Skyfall from the James Bond movie of the same name.

Here is a full list of the winners:

Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role: Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained
