Good grief, the third anniversary marking the launch of Greg In Hollywood was last Friday (March 2) and I forgot to make a big deal out of it! It’s not like me to miss out on an opportunity for self promotion!

Well, better late than never!

I decided to add a few things up. In the past 36 months, I have done 7,232 posts!

OMG.

That’s a whole lot of Morning Men, Showtune Sundays, I Love Lucy Fridays and all the rest!

For those of you who don’t know how Greg In Hollywood got started, a little bit of history: I was an entertainment writer for the Los Angeles Daily News and had started the blog Out In Hollywood in the summer of 2006.

Unfortunately for me, they decided to lay me off the day after the Oscars in 2009. In the photo here, I had found out, through sources, that I was about to lose my job just a day earlier. But decided to go to the Oscars anyway. I must have been in a daze because I forgot to iron my pants!

I then stayed home the next day and wrote up all my coverage before they could call and officially kick me to the curb!

Anyway, once I went in to clean out my desk, it was clear that not only was I not going to have a job, I was not going to have a blog – at least not the one I had founded and built up over 2.5 years.

The archives, the editor of the Daily News told me, were theirs. But I could use the Out In Hollywood name if I made clear that it had nothing to do with them.

Uh, no thanks.

So, I had to start over. Changed the name from Out In Hollywood to Greg In Hollywood and got rolling again.

It was scary but exciting and I had the most magnificent people helping me every step of the way. Without Danny Sullivan, Kate Cohen, Val Cohen and Lorna Harris I would never have been able to launch Greg In Hollywood exactly one week after I was given my walking papers.

Here is a LINK to how it all unfolded.

On the occasion of this third anniversary, I want to thank those four magnificent people, publicly, once more. I will never forget how they were there for me during what could have been a terrible ending but was instead a beautiful new beginning.

Here is to many more years of Greg In Hollywood!

After winning twice early in her career, Meryl had lost 14 straight times and in several cases against far lesser performances.

Her greatness seemed to be counted against her.

But not tonight!

At the 84th Annual Academy Awards, Miss Streep’s name was called as the winner in the best actress category for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

“I want to thank all my colleagues, all my friends. I see my life before my eyes,” said Streep. “My old friends, my new friends. Really, this is such a great honor. But the thing that counts the most with me is the friendship, and the love and the sheer joy we have shared making movies together.”

She also thanked her husband, Don Gummer, early in the speech for fear that if she left him to the end, the music would start to play her off. She said tearfully: “Everything I value most in our lives, you’ve given me.”

Meryl won her third Oscar on her 17th nomination – the most of any performer. The win put her in a category with other three-time Oscar winners Jack Nicholson, Walter Brennan and Ingrid Bergman. Only Katharine Hepburn with four wins had more.

Her previous wins came in 1980 for Kramer vs. Kramer (supporting actress) and in 1983 for Sophie’s Choice (best actress).

I had so convinced myself that Meryl would lose again and that Viola Davis would win that I’m still in a state of shock. I thought it should have happened for Julie & Julia, for Doubt, for Adaptation and for One True Thing.

But this win makes the long wait all the more sweet!

UPDATED: Backstage, Streep said: “I thought I was old and jaded. But when they call your name, you just go into a white light. … I felt like a kid again.”

She joked that when she last won, “two of the nominees weren’t even conceived yet.”

I have begun a new job working as a US correspondent for Gay Star News, a global gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender news and entertainment site that just went live today.

We are currently in beta testing mode before the official launch on Jan. 5, 2012. But I want to invite all Greg In Hollywood followers to become readers from the start! I’ve already posted stories on teenager Jonah Mowry defending his YouTube video and the flap following Neil Patrick Harris saying “tranny” on Live With Kelly last week.

These stories have been covered briefly on the blog but what’s great about this new arrangement is that I get to continue Greg In Hollywood but also do some more in-depth reporting and writing for this new site.

It’s a gift to be able to do what you love doing – and get paid for it!

Greg In Hollywood is the successor to Out In Hollywood, the blog I founded at the Los Angeles Daily News in June 2006 and authored until February 2009. I felt it was important to not only cover the entertainment industry, but to focus on the LGBT aspects of it all.

It’s been such fertile ground with the gay marriage debate continuing to rage, with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell set aside, with the launch of the gay television channels like Logo and Here! TV (and Bravo!), and with a growing number of significant gay characters on such prime-time shows as Glee, Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy, and Modern Family. Even more significant is there are openly gay performers like Chris Colfer, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Neil Patrick Harris, Jane Lynch, and Luke Macfarlane playing gay or straight roles on these and other shows.

Also, three openly gay people, Ellen DeGeneres, Nate Berkus and Sara Gilbert are hosting or co-hosting nationally syndicated daytime talk shows and Rosie O’Donnell returns in the fall on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network.

Then there is American Idol which after so many years of being seemingly terrified of having any finalists be openly gay, had that barrier broken down with the arrival of Adam Lambert.

Best of all, more famous folks are coming out since 2006 starting with Neil Patrick Harris, T.R. Knight and Lance Bass joining the previously out Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O’Donnell, Wilson Cruz, Robert Gant, Elton John, Gerald McCullouch, Boy George, Peter Paige, Portia de Rossi, Jason Stuart, Ian McKellen, Anthony Rapp, KD Lang, George Takei, Amanda Beardse, Michael Feinstein, Leslie Jordan, Doug Spearman, Christopher Seiber, and Alec Mapa.

Since the launch of this blog 24 months ago, Ricky Martin, Johnny Weir, Meredith Baxter, Adam Lambert, Sean Hayes, Chely Wright, Jonathan Groff, Chris Colfer, Amber Heard, Gareth Thomas, Geri Jewell, Jonathan Knight, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sara Gilbert, Michael Urie, Spencer Day, Madison Hildebrand, Scott Evans, and Clay Aiken are among those have also gone public about their sexuality.

So there is a lot to write about these days, a lot to cover. Plus there is the pleasure of choosing a Morning Man every single day of the year and all the Lunch Break Videos – especially Meryl Monday, the I Love Lucy clips and Sunday Showtunes!

I didn't expect to become a full-time blogger and freelance journalist two years ago because I didn't expect to be laid off from the Daily News where I was a columnist and blogger and had worked since 2001. But that's the breaks and my overriding feeling as I walked out of the newsroom that last day was a feeling of "I don't to stop doing what I'm doing."

I was not eager to jump back into newspapers right away so Greg In Hollywood was born exactly seven days after my layoff [see the story of the launch HERE].

I will forever be grateful to Danny Sullivan, Kate Cohen, Val Cohen and Lorna Harris for dedicating their time in helping me get it together and to keep doing what I love without skipping a beat.

It has been a remarkable experience and given me the opportunity to work at my own pace and to set up shop in just about every coffee house in town!

I initially favored Java Detour on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Robertson in West Hollywood despite the haughty attitude of some of the employees there. Sadly, it closed its doors (I wonder why) so I moved on to Insomnia Cafe on Melrose and Mudspot on LaBrea as well as various Coffee Bean and Tea Leafs with my favorite being the location on Wilshire Blvd. at Crescent Heights. But once Starbucks introduced free WiFi last year, that’s where you’d find me most days.

But I do have some BREAKING NEWS for you: Starting today, I’ll be working out of an office on Wilshire Boulevard inside the newsroom of the Los Angeles Business Journal. I start today as the award-winning publication’s entertainment and media reporter.

A few months ago, I began itching to return to a newsroom and I am very happy with where I landed and excited to get started on some great stories!

Where does this leave Greg In Hollywood?

I remain dedicated to keeping this blog going just as strong and hope that you remain dedicated to reading it! But my posting schedule will be a bit more erratic since I will be doing this in my spare time and not have the luxury of spending my day at a coffee house blogging and working on freelance assignments any time I please.

In closing, I want to thank you for the first two years, for showing up each day to check out what I’ve come up with for you. I love bumping into readers around town who I’ve never met and I appreciate all the kind words they have had about the blog.

Then there are the readers I know who have consistently posted comments either on the blog, on Facebook or Twitter and stars like Lily Tomlin, Florence Henderson, Wilson Cruz, Chris Gorham, Nick Adams, Thom Bierdz, and Eric Sheffer Stevens who are among those who have taken the time to send a nice note or email along the way.

You make it all worthwhile.

Break out the champagne and have a toast for Greg In Hollywood which celebrates its first anniversary TODAY! That’s more than 2,500 posts and I’m just getting started.

I launched this site seven days after I lost my job as a columnist and blogger at the Los Angeles Daily News.

I had never been laid off from any job during my previous 22 years in newspapers which included 11 years at the Los Angeles Times and more than seven years at the Daily News.

But the newspaper industry has been struggling and I’m one of many people who have had their careers take an unexpected turn in recent years. I felt at the top of my game and my overwhelming feeling after getting that pink slip was that I wanted to keep writing – to not even miss a single day – and I wanted to do it on my own terms.

That’s how Greg In Hollywood was born.

It’s been a fast 12 months that has included coverage of the memorable HRC dinner in LA, LA Gay Pride, the GLAAD Media Awards, the Outfest Film Festival and Outfest Fusion, AIDS Walk LA, the Outfest Legacy Awards, the Emmy Awards, the Creative Arts Emmys, the Daytime Emmy Awards, the American Music Awards, the LA Gay & Lesbian Center Gala, and many other events.

Greg In Hollywood is the successor to Out In Hollywood, the blog I founded at the Daily News in June 2006 and authored until February 2009. I felt it was important to not only cover the entertainment industry, but to focus on the LGBT aspects of it all.

It’s been such fertile ground with the gay marriage debate continuing to rage, with the launch of the gay television channels Logo and Here! TV, with shows like The L Word and Queer as Folk, and with a growing number of significant gay characters on such prime-time shows as Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family and Ugly Betty (all on ABC) and the daytime dramas One Life to Live and As the World Turns.

Then there is American Idol which after so many years of being seemingly terrified of having any finalists be openly gay, had that barrier broken down with the arrival of Adam Lambert.

Best of all, more famous folks are coming out since 2006 starting with Neil Patrick Harris, T.R. Knight and Lance Bass joining the previously out Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O’Donnell, Wilson Cruz, Robert Gant, Elton John, Boy George, Peter Paige, Portia de Rossi, Jason Stuart, Ian McKellen, Anthony Rapp, KD Lang, George Takei, Amanda Beardse, Michael Feinstein, Leslie Jordan, Doug Spearman, Christopher Seiber, and Alec Mapa.

Others out include Lily Tomlin, Cheyenne Jackson, Luke Macfarlane, Richard Chamberlain, Wanda Sykes, Cherry Jones, Jane Lynch, Bryan Batt, Jesse Tyler Fergeson, Cynthia Nixon, Heather Matorazzo, Tab Hunter, Rex Lee, Sarah Paulsen, David Hyde Pierce, Rupert Everett, Nathan Lane, BD Wong, Mellissa Etheridge, Tammy Lynn Michaels, Alan Cumming, Suze Orman, Gavin Creel and Tim Gunn.

So there is a lot to write about these days, a lot to cover. Plus there is the pleasure of choosing a Morning Man every single day of the year and all the Lunch Break Videos – especially the I Love Lucy clips and Sunday Showtunes!

I’m so thankful for the thousands of loyal daily readers (and growing!) who really make my efforts worthwhile. I’ve enjoyed it so much and can promise you that the second year will be even better.

The best way I can celebrate this one-year milestone is to grab myself a cup of coffee and get back to work – I’ll have that champagne later!

They were unaware that I began my new blog, Greg In Hollywood, two weeks ago!

People have asked me, “Well, don’t you have an email list of readers?” No, I do not. I wasn’t planning to get laid off so did not think to assemble one!

The paper, which is in no way affiliated with my new site, put a link up yesterday directing readers to this site – a gesture that is much appreciated. While I have started from scratch here, the archives of Out In Hollywood remain available for you to enjoy!

The new site was designed by Kate Cohen and is pretty much what you remember content-wise with such new daily features as Greg In the Afternoon and Morning Man. More to come!

Since you probably have a lot of catching up to do on Greg In Hollywood, I’m going to put a few links here of some of the greatest hits from the first 14 days to get you started! (Also, I want to hear from you! Post comments!)

I’m staying at the Newport Beach home of my friends Danny Sullivan and Lorna Harris this weekend (they call me their Kato Kalin) and after a glass of wine (or two) Friday night, Lorna flipped on her laptop to show me this hilarious skit from the BBC sketch show Little Britain: Rosie O’Donnell guests and in a sketch, is a guest speaker at a Weight Watchers-type group with as totally political incorrect monitor.
I’m busy attending events, writing, twittering (or is it tweeting?) and trying to promote Greg In Hollywood all over the place! If you are an Out In Hollywood reader and are just finding me here, sorry for the lack of info on my old site. I am awaiting approval from The Daily News on putting a link under my photo to let people know where I am now.

Anyway, feedback has been terrific so far and a lot of people have marveled at how we got the site up and running so fast. I’ll tell you how. Their names are Danny Sullivan, Kate Cohen, Val Cohen and Lorna Harris and I love them all dearly. To learn about how all of this came together, go to From Layoff to Kickoff in Seven Days.

Will do some light posting over the weekend so check back! I’ll be attending the Outfest Fusion event tonight and tomorrow and on Sunday, the Magic Castle Awards hosted by Neil Patrick Harris!

We really gotta see Hugh Jackman in a big-screen musical soon, don’t you think? He showed the world at the Oscars what a terrific song and dance man he is and what an absolute charmer. Anyway, until that happens, there is no shortage of hunky Hugh on the big and small screens.

Three days ago, the much maligned epic Australia was released on DVD. The Baz Luhrman-directed flick starring Hugh and lovely Nicole Kidman was a major box office disappointment but I hope it’s widely seen on DVD.

I thoroughly enjoyed it when I saw it with my friends Danny and Lorna last November. We went opening weekend and watched it at Big Newport in Orange County.

It felt like a real special night out with a big, sweeping epic on screen with old-fashioned movie stars in an old fashioned movie house. The line was so long and we were so hungry that Danny bought our popcorn while we were waiting to get in and we ended up eating the entire bucket before we even sat down. Probably shoulda eaten dinner first!

So, here is a trailer from Australia:

And then, of course, there is the upcoming X-Men Orgins: Wolverine to be released on May 1. The X-Men franchise is a huge money-maker and this one has the added bonus of also starring another Greg In Hollywood fave: Ryan Reynolds! I’m so there.

Here’s a trailer from X-Men Orgins: Wolverine:

I think Oprah Winfrey would refer to this as a “wow moment.”

I was riding bikes with my friends along the boardwalk of the Balboa Peninsula last week and tried to remember the last time I felt so excited about the future. Then I realized exactly when: it was nearly 25 years earlier, the week I moved into the dorms at San Diego State University. Everything and anything seemed possible then and now it does again.

Except then, I had a lot more hair.

After more than two decades as a full-time print journalist , I am beginning my own site – Greg In Hollywood. Of course, I would not be having such an amazing time had I not lost my job as a columnist and blogger a week ago! I don’t make light of it because in this economy, it sucks to lose a steady paying job. But there is something to all that stuff about one door closing and another opening.

To all of you who have been faithful readers of my old blog, Out In Hollywood, welcome to my new blog, Greg In Hollywood. It will be similar but somehow, I think it will be more provocative and hard-hitting now that I am a free agent.

I cannot believe all that has happened in the past seven days. Here is how things unfolded and how Greg In Hollywood was unexpectedly born:

THE LAYOFF: I learned of the plans to lay me off from the LA Daily News – on my own – two days before the Academy Awards. Apparently, I would have been shown the door that very day had I not been on an unpaid furlough. People who have written to me or to various blogs have expressed outrage that the paper sent me to the Oscars then let me go the next day. But the truth is, I made the decision to cover the Academy Awards anyway. I mean, I already had the tux! And how could I miss the opportunity to do just one more awards show with the lovely Sandra Barrera (pictured with me last Sunday). We had a terrific time, as always.

THE REACTION: In the past seven days, I have heard from basically everyone I have ever worked with in journalism over the past 20 years and from just about every friend I’ve ever had – and many I didn’t even know I had. There were so many heartfelt thoughts conveyed that I will never have to wonder if what I do each day touches people. Then there were the more than 200 Facebook messages, an unending stream of emails and phone calls from friends with the kind of supportive words that I think are usually reserved for your funeral. I’m so glad I didn’t have to die to hear them! Honestly, I’ve never experienced such an outpouring and I wish it for everyone just once in their life. Amazing. As my college friend Bill Greene said the other day: “It’s like “It’s a Wonderful Life” only you didn’t have to live it.” My validation levels are off-the-chart right now.

THE PLANNING: Conversations about continuing Out In Hollywood as an independent venture began the very day I learned of my layoff which greatly helped to mitigate the shock! As I wrapped up my old job, My close friends Danny Sullivan and Lorna Harris were immediately on board. Danny isn’t just my former LA Times colleague and one-time roommate (back in the early 90s), but he’s also one of the world’s foremost Internet experts in terms of search. He has been writing about search for nearly 15 years and is currently editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land. Danny travels all around the world giving keynote speeches about this stuff – the stuff I know nothing about! Lorna, who is handling marketing efforts, used to work at the BBC World Service then came to America to marry Danny and headed up promotions at the old KEZY radio station. Lorna is currently editor of Boudicia, a social news site for women. I was in good hands and working with two people of great character who I trust fully and know have my best interests at heart.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER: There was no time to waste. I left the Daily News newsroom for a final time on Tuesday and with belongings from my desk still in the back seat of the car, I drove straight to Danny and Lorna’s home in Newport Beach. I stayed for several days in their guest house so we could work well into the night. The first step was getting someone to host the site. We called our friend, Ken Spreitzer over Tiger Technologies and he quickly took care of the domain name registration. Danny and Ken felt strongly that I should leave the Out In Hollywood brand behind and start anew. I was at first reluctant but by late Tuesday, it was clear that the new blog would be called Greg In Hollywood. (The old blog remains up at DailyNews.com with all the archives intact so it is still accessible to you there if you are feeling nostalgic.)

Wednesday: Danny sent a tweet out on Twitter that we are looking for a designer for a logo. The person who answered that tweet was Kate Cohen, an old friend, a supremely talented artist (her paintings are amazing!) and just a total original. We were ecstatic to have Kate on board. She had just launched the new online news site Seal Beach Daily and is a former graphic artist at the Orange County Register and writer for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans.

Thursday, we had a “staff meeting” over lunch at the beach house and Kate said she was on board to design the site! I was just hoping for a logo to go with some kind of standard format so this was such a gift! But Kate’s eyes widened when I said I was hoping to launch the blog live the next day! She set me straight (if that is at all possible!). The soonest, soonest, would be Monday. But she could get a promo done by that night announcing Greg In Hollywood and teasing a few of the stories I’d been working on. Danny went into overdrive doing technical things that I will probably never understand but essentially make it easy for people to find the blog ion the Web.

THE FINAL PUSH: Kate’s web engineer husband, Val Cohen, joined our team and dedicated the weekend to building the site. Val has been designing and implementing publishing systems since the mid-1980s and also worked at the New Orleans Times-Picayune and The Orange County Register. He was a multimedia developer and technical director of a number of Internet properties including Hilton.com. He’s currently a software developer in corporate IT.

Kate and Val were total heroes in this, complete professionals with very high standards. They did their work from their home in Belmont Shore as Danny, Lorna and I continued our efforts in Newport. Phone calls and updates were constant early into Monday morning Thank God for modern technology! I had spent Saturday night and much of the Sunday writing content, putting together a Blogroll and most daunting for me, assembling Flickr galleries. Danny talked me through it and look forward to the galleries growing in the coming weeks and months.

I feel like my work – creating the content – was really the easiest part of this fast launch. Somehow, it was meant to be that this gifted group of people would step up and become this team with laser-beam focus and the experience to make it happen. We’re still tweaking and ironing out some glitches but wanted to go live as soon as humanly possible. At 1:45 a.m. on Monday, I watched as Danny did a final check to make sure all the links work etc. There were other things to check as well so it is 3:10 a.m., as I update this post and Danny is still exchanging emals with Kate. He likes to say that I’m a bit of an idiot savant when it comes to blogging since fully get the spirit of it, but I am completely clueless about the technical end. I got a good idea of what is involved tonight and that is why I’m in awe of what this team of friends was able to do so quickly.

I’ll be posting at my usual pace, doing interviews with people of interest, being a fly on the wall for you at various events and bringing you news with my take on it. So let’s get started all over again! Bookmark this page and send a link to all your friends!

UPDATE: For all of you high-tech folks, Danny Sullivan has detailed how the blog came to life at his Daggle site. Read Behind the Scenes of the Greg In Hollywood Launch.

“I was saddened about your news. I have been reading your blog about 5 times a day since about 2 years ago. I am happy that it will continue. I think you have been a great contributor and representative of the gay community and I am sorry that our economic crisis has caused this to happen. Well, it is the time for CHANGE and so with that I will look forward to your new format. I am glad we will still be able to enjoy your journey!!! The best is yet to come!”
