Bobby Brown: Whitney Houston was bisexual
Whitney Houston’s ex-husband Bobby Brown says those longstanding rumors were true: the singer was bisexual.
Brown confirms the speculation in his new memoir Every Little Step, according to US Weekly.
‘I know,’ Brown, 47, tells the magazine. ‘We were married for 14 years. There are some things we talked about that were personal to us.’
Houston, who died in 2012, was long-rumored to be in a relationship with her best friend and assistant, Robyn Crawford.
Brown says there was family pressure to keep the women apart.
‘I really feel that if Robyn was accepted into Whitney’s life, Whitney would still be alive today,’ Brown says. ‘She didn’t have close friends with her anymore.’
Whitney’s mother had told Oprah Winfrey in 2013 she ‘absolutely’ would have been bothered if the singer had been lesbian.
Cissy Houston’s book, Remembering Whitney, touched on Whitney’s friendship with Crawford.
During the interview, Oprah read the section of the book where Cissy says: ‘I knew I didn’t want Robyn near my daughter and I told Nippy [the family’s pet name for Whitney] that.
‘There wasn’t much I could do though. Nippy liked Robyn. She was passed the age where I could forbid her from seeing someone. Kids have a mind of their own when they get older. They want to experiment with all kinds of things. And I don’t know if it was more than that.’
Questioned by Oprah, Cissy admitted she ‘didn’t really like’ Crawford, saying the way she spoke ‘disrespectful’.
But she added: ‘She was alright. She turned out to be okay, I guess, because that was her friend.’
However, when Oprah asked if she would have been ‘bothered’ if her daughter was a lesbian she answered with just one word: ‘Absolutely.’
‘It would have bothered you?’ Oprah asked.
‘Mmmm hmmmm,’ Cissy confirmed.
‘You wouldn’t have liked that?’
‘Not at all.’
