Billie Jean King schools Rafael Nadal on equal pay for women: “The world needs to always move forward, not backward”

Very disappointed in Rafael Nadal on this one.

The 11-time French Open champion and current world number one threw cold water on the idea that women should earn as much as men in tennis, saying “it’s a comparison we shouldn’t even make.”

“Female models earn more than male models, and nobody says anything,” he was quoted as telling an Italian magazine. “Why? Because they have a larger following. In tennis, too, who gathers a larger audience earns more.”

Nadal’s comments got the attention of tennis legend Billie jean King whose life’s work has been fighting for gender equality – including equal prize money in tennis. BJK tweeted earlier today: “The world needs to always move forward, not backward. To make it a better place, we need more equality and inclusion, not less.” #EqualityForAll

One Remark

  1. But I’m sure Rafa would have a problem if someone paid his wife or daughter less money for the same work.

I don’t understand this way of thinking.
