Bernadette Peters to succeed Bette Midler on Broadway in “Hello, Dolly!” – Victor Garber cast too!
When a huge star like Bette Midler leaves a huge it like Hello, Dolly! it takes someone really amazing to keep the show going.
Producers have found just such a person: Bernadette Peters!
I let out a little yelp when I read that she is Midler’s replacement and will open on February 22, according to The New York Times.
And get this: replacing David Hyde Pierce will be four-time Tony nominee Victor Garber!
I think this remains a very hot ticket just like A Little Night Music did when Peters and Elaine Stritch replaced Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury.
Peters is a Broadway legend who won Tony Awards for lead actress in a musical for Annie Get Your Gun and Song and Dance and was nominated for Gypsy, The Goodbye Girl, Sunday in the Park With George, On the Town and Mack & Mable.
Her other Broadway credits include Follies and Into the Woods, among others.
Here is what the Divine Miss M has to say about her replacement: “I cannot imagine leaving Dolly Levi in better hands than those of Bernadette Peters. She has created more historic roles in more legendary musicals than any living Broadway star, and most of the dead ones, too. I cannot wait to see her in the show from my very expensive premium seat in Row G which I know I will have to pay for. She is joining the greatest group of people I have ever worked with, and when my run in this amazing show— and in this amazing part—is over, I will miss all of them more than I can express. I know they will take care of her the way they have taken care of me—with the heart and generosity they have shown me since day one of rehearsal.”
