Are you ready for LA Pride this weekend?

I know LA Pride weekend doesn’t officially kick off until tomorrow night but the party has already begun for Greg In Hollywood.

Just got home from Sur Lounge in West Hollywood where Vancouver tourism organizations sponsored a media party. It was tons of fun and there was a drag queen named Carlotta Gurl who dazzled us as Marilyn Monroe then Celene Dion then Katy Perry.

She really gave it all that she had and we were all very appreciative. There was an open bar and all kinds of goodies served like crab cakes and fresh shrimp and a goodie bag that included a bottle of vodka and a red velvet cupcake from Sprinkles!

On Wednesday night, attended the West Hollywood Mayor’s Reception kicking off LA Pride. It was held by the pool at the Mondrian Hotel on the Sunset Strip. Every time I go to a boozy event there, I’m always surprised that no one has ever fallen in the pool.

I always expect it – always!

As I arrived, I ran into a friend who said happily: “The drinks are free!” So I walk up to the bar and I see some dude pulling a wad of cash out of his pocket. I say to him, ‘Aren’t the drinks free?’ He says, ‘Only some drinks.’

So when it was my turn to order, just so there was no confusion, I asked the bartender for the ‘free vodka.’ He cracked up! I didn’t even mean to make a funny.

It was a lovely party with all kinds of cool people.

West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land addressed the crowd and she was funny: “I want to thank you in advance for all the fun you will have and all the money you will spend.”

“It’s so exciting to feel the energy that started a week ago and goes through Sunday,” she added.

I chatted with West Hollywood City Councilman John D’Amico and we laughed because I didn’t think he remembered sticking his tongue in my ear when we took a photo together at the Frontiers 30th anniversary party last year.

“How drunk did you think I was?” he said.

Well, hard to say. it was my birthday and I was rather sauced myself!

Also chatted up Billy Masters whose twice-monthly column is always the first thing I go to in each issue of Frontiers and gabbed a bit with Wilson Cruz who the next day was heading to the ATX TV Festival for My So-Called Life and Party of Five reunions. But he told me he’d be returning in time for Sunday’s parade.

It’s going to be a busy weekend for me – but happily so. Gay Star News, for which I am the LA correspondent, is a global media sponsor of LA Pride this year so I’ll be filing stories each day about the goings on!
