Ann Curry confirms she is leaving “Today”

It has been fascinating to watch Ann Curry co-host The Today Show during the last few weeks as news swirled that she was about to be replaced.

She showed up each day and she did the job and I have never admired her more.

Miss Curry, made co-anchor of the show a year ago after 15 years as news anchor, confirms in an interview with USA Today that she will be announcing her departure on Thursday’s show.

It’s “going to be a bit of a tough day,” she said, sounding as though she were fighting back tears. “I’m going to have to tell our viewers. That’s what makes me more emotional than anything. I don’t want to leave them. I love them. And I will really miss them.”

Her imminent departure was first reported last week in The New York Times and attributed to a network source.

“I don’t know who has been behind the leaks, but no question they’ve hurt deeply,” Curry said.

She shoots down reports about friction or a lack of chemistry between her and co-anchor Matt Lauer.

“You know, Matt and I have had great on-air chemistry for 14 years, been part of the No. 1 winning team for a history-making number of years,” she says. “We’ve had a terrific relationship for all these years, and he’s such a star. Obviously he’s considered the golden boy of morning television. He’s so good when you sit next to him; it’s hard not to be helped by that. He’s funny and glib, and he knows how the show works. It’s been my honor in this last year to sit next to him.”

Curry may be leaving her job as co-anchor but she’s not leaving NBC. She has signed a new multi-year contract and will lead a seven-person unit covering the world’s biggest stories, from the civil uprising in Syria to the plight of the poor in America.

She’ll produce network specials and pieces for NBC Nightly News, Dateline, Rock Center— and Today.

“In my secret heart of hearts, I see this as a thrilling opportunity,” she says. “To have a ticket to every big story in the world — no small matter.”

6 Remarks

  1. ANN is FIRST CLASS…. I love her appearance, her voice, her conversations with all of her guests. For this to happen the way it did (giving her the position to start with and then taking it away in such short fashion) is a big blow to reputations of the Executives, Matt & AL – because we now know what goes on behind the scenes.. And I don’t want to face you, The Today Program, each morning thinking how all of this was handled. Hello Good Morning America!

  2. Although it is not surprising the tactless way NBC has handled Ann’s departure, it is still sad news. I have enjoyed Ann on the Today Show for 15 years and she has been not only a loyal member of the team, but an incredible journalist.
Giving her exit three minutes at the end of the broadcast shows how little NBC values their talent. I have watched the Today Show since I was a child in the 80s and given the way they have treated her, I am done with the Today Show.

  3. You and me both, Brew. Never in my 36 years have I watched Good Morning, America, but tomorrow, and for the foreseeable future, I will be waking up with the morning crew at ABC.

  4. I am still very angry at how Ann Curry was treated at the today show.
Ann has always been such a classy act and such a kind and caring person to every person that she has interviewed. I can not stand to even put the Today show on anymore. Good Morning America is now on my TV every morning. And if Matt thinks his shiny bald head and a bunch of younger perky girls is going to make that show number one, I think he and NBC underestimated the Power of A Woman-Ann Curry…God bless you Ann Curry..you outclassed every one of them. You go girl!!!

  5. I understand ratings and business – But the suddeness of Anns outing was not necessary They should have announced it sooner and presented it as a Promotion and a New challange for ANN. Same outcome but done Professionally. I’m a little disappointed that Matt and Al did’nt Speak up for their “Friend” and give her a well deserved Send Off.

  6. I turned on the today show on August 16th after about a month long absence of watching it. I noticed Ann Curry was not there. I was watching some of the Summer Olmpics on NBC and I heard someone says something about Matt Lauer and Al Roker but did not mention Ann Curry,so I figured something was up. As far as the treatment of Ann by NBC,I am not a fan of the way that was handled but As for Ann she has been promoted to something better. Way to go Girl! Good Luck! I probably won’t be watching the TODAY SHOW much anymore.
