Andrew Rannells tells about the night he blew the lyrics to his King George solo in ‘Hamilton’

Jonathan Groff got a Tony nomination for his performance as King George in the smash Broadway musical Hamilton.

He recently left the show to focus on a new TV series and had earlier taken a five-week break to film the finale to HBO’s Looking.

During that five-week break last fall, Andrew Rannells stepped into the role.

The actor shared with Jimmy Fallon on Friday night his experience in the role which has one song and nine minutes total time on stage.

‘It’s a great part but I was nervous obviously to be dropped into the show – it’s a huge hit – I did fine the first like four shows, totally fine.’

Then came the fifth show and he just went blank.

‘Couldn’t remember the next line – nothing.’

He said this led him to make ‘a bold but maybe incorrect choice.’ He kept moving his lips in the hopes that the audience would think his microphone had gone out.

‘I looked like a crazy person,’ he said.

He got back on track when the conductor yelled up a lyric.

But Rannells will never forget the experience: ‘It was the longest like eight seconds of my life.’
