Andrew Rannells met Obama and suddenly realized the president had probably seen him naked on ‘Girls’

There are many things that can go through your mind when meeting the president of the United States.

For Andrew Rannells, what suddenly flashed through his when meeting Barack Obama after a performance of Hamilton on Broadway last fall was that the president had seen him naked.

Rannells was only in the show for five weeks as a temporary fill-in for Jonathan Groff in the role of King George and had nine minutes on stage each night.

He had expected to mention to Obama that he had worked with First Daughter Malia when she interned on his HBO show Girls. But before he could, Obama mentioned recognizing him from seeing him on the show.

‘I just had a full meltdown,’ Rannells told Seth Meyers during an interview last night.

The actor said what immediately leaped into his mind was: ‘He watched the show, he knows who I am. So he’s seen me naked. That’s weird.’

The cast had been told they would only have about 12 seconds with Obama and Rannells time went well over as the president talked and the mortified actor’s mind raced.

‘I was just thinking all these things. And then I looked at the cast, and the whole rest of the cast was looking at me like, “Why does the temp get more time to talk to the president than, like, the rest of us? He did nine minutes of work.”‘

Rannells, whose big break was as the star of The Book of Mormon on Broadway, will return to The Great White Way later this year in the musical Falsettos.
