Anderson Cooper opts to extend CNN contract, won’t be co-hosting ‘Live!’ with Kelly Ripa
Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper might make a great TV team but they won’t be a permanent one.
Cooper has extended his contract with CNN and taken himself out of the running to succeed Michael Strahan as co-host of Live With Kelly!
Ripa and Cooper are close personal friends and he had been her top pick to join her on the show. But Cooper will continue to occasionally fill in as co-host with his next appearance scheduled for October 12.
The staff at CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 was told by the anchor last week of his decision to extend his contract with CNN which allows him to also work part-time as a correspondent for the CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Cooper has co-hosted Live! many times in the past but a decision is not expected to be made until after ABC spends the summer placing a series of potential replacements alongside Ripa.
During a recent appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live last spring, a caller asked Cooper if he was interested in the gig.
‘I love Kelly and I think Kelly’s the heart and soul of that show and it’s going to go on and continue to be great and I wish Michael the best in his new endeavor,’ Cooper had said in what looked like an effort to not answer the question directly.
When host Andy Cohen asked more directly if he take the job if offered, Cooper’s answer ended up being prophetic: ‘Look, I’m very happy at CNN.’
