Anderson Cooper interviews Dan Choi on DADT

President Barack Obama may have an awful lot on his plate but it is still so disappointing that he is not moving on repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” and that his only mention of gay marriage was during a joke over the weekend at the White Hoiuse correspondents dinner.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs indicted this week that Obama will not intervene to keep gay servicemembers from being dismissed from the military, despite his vow to end the DADT policy.  Gibbs acknowledged “the policy isn’t working for our national interests,” but added that ending it will “require more than the snapping of one’s fingers.”

“To get fundamental reform in this instance requires a legislative vehicle,” Gibbs said. “The president made a promise to change this policy; he will work with the Joints Chiefs of Staff, the administration and with Congress to ensure that we have a policy that works for our national interests. … There have been discussions about the best way to move forward, and the only sustainable way to do that is through — sustainable and durable way — is through legislation, which the president has promised and has continued to work for.”

Meanwhile, a very brave young guy named Dan Choi is putting a human face on the issue at this very important time. He is beiong discharged under the DADT policy and told Anderson Cooper last night: “It’s really insulting, it’s really a slap in the face. … I will not shut up, and I will not be forced to be silent.”
