Alex Newell delivers stupendous rendition of “If I Were a Boy” on “Glee” as trans character deals with bathroom bullies

In this week’s episode of Glee, transgender teen Unique (Alex Newell) was bullied for wanting to use the girls bathroom. When she did use the boy’s bath room, a gang of football jocks bullied and intimidated her.

It’s a problem that a new California that goes into effect in January is designed to address. It allows trans students to use the restrooms and locker rooms of the gender that they identify.

Of course there is a misguided effort to overturn the law and I hope it is unsuccessful. Trans students have enough to deal with already.

Anyway, back to Unique. Football players start harassing her and flush her wig down the toilet. She sings Beyonce’s If I Were A Boy alone in the bathroom, and it will break your heart.

Kudos to the show for tackling this and to Newell for a powerful performance.

2 Remarks

  1. The religious zealots have the same tired, debunked arguments when it comes to GLBT issues. Unfortunately, as we saw with Prop 8, too many people still believe the BS that’s dished to them. Too many want to believe our sexual orientation is a choice. It is my hope that we do a better job of crafting the message this time because our transgendered brothers and sisters need to be protected, treated equally and with dignity. Just like everyone else.

  2. Not a big fan of Glee but that was an incredible performance. Thank you for posting that.
