Alan Cumming talks marriage and his bisexuality

http://s3.broadway.com/article-photos/large/150784.jpgAlan Cumming is currently one of the star’s of CBS’s better-than-ever The Good Wife – a nice big hit for this multi-talented Scottish stage, television and film actor, singer, writer, director, producer and author.

Alan is also enjoying some well-deserved rave reviews for his performance in the wonderful indie flick Any Day Now and early next year will revive his Tony Award winning role in the musical Cabaret.

Married to artist Grant Shaffer, Alan chatted with Instinct about his busy career, his accent, his sexuality and much more.

Here are a few excerpts:

On being bisexual: “I have a healthy sexual appetite and a healthy imagination. I still define myself as a bisexual even though I have chosen to be with Grant. I’m sexually attracted to the female form even though I am with a man and I just feel that bisexuals have a bad rap.”

On marriage equality: Yes, I am married. But, no—not at all is there equality. What I think is great about marriage for gay people, other then having those rights, is the ritual that we now have that includes everyone—your family and friends and all the people you love most in the world who get to come together to celebrate your relationship. We have never had that before … I think that it’s really an amazing thing. For me, I really felt that at our wedding. I have also been married before to a woman. But it struck me when I got married to Grant, how great it is to be able to do this with all of our family. We first got married in London and then here in New York on our 5th wedding anniversary. I think we have a long way to go even though great strides have been made. Until all the laws are equal, we can’t blame people for being prejudiced if the law of the land does not fight that prejudice.

One Remark

  1. So true, so very true “Until all the laws are equal, we can’t blame people for being prejudiced if the law of the land does not fight that prejudice.” quoted from Alan Cumming noted above
