Afternoon Greg: Wanda Sykes on Leno; Maya Angelou; TR Knight and David Hyde Pierce
I’m in the OC today to babysit my 7-year-old nephew who is growing up by leaps and bounds. He’s already done a series of skateboards tricks for me, played with his light saber and we’re off to the movies in a short while. We have locked horns over Pixar’s Up (my choice) and A Night at the Museum 2 (his choice). Since I’ve got the money and the car, I have a feeling who will prevail.
WANDA AND JAY: One of our favorite lesbians, Wanda Sykes, was on with Jay Leno this week and was her usual smart and funny self. Thought it would be a fun way to kick off the Friday column by sharing some video of her appearance. As always, she’s a hoot!
MAYA’S MARRIAGE SUPPORT: A rock. A river. A tree.
Don’t ya just love Maya Angelou’s awesome poem On Pulse of Morning which she wrote for Bill Clinton’s inauguration? I’ve loved her ever since, reading her several memoirs and books of poetry. Anyway, Maya – now 81 years old – is quietly working to urge passage of a same-sex marriage bill in that state.
Maya maintains a home in Harlem in New York City and placed three phone calls to state senators in the past week because she believes that allowing same-sex couples to marry is a matter of fairness.
“To love someone takes a lot of courage,” she said in an interview with the New York Times. “So how much more is one challenged when the love is of the same sex and the laws say, ‘I forbid you from loving this person’?”
I posted David Hyde Pierce’s comments on The View this week about his marriage last fall and very articulate about the CA Supreme Court’s upholding of Prop. 8. Above is the video of that appearance.
And finally, I think this photo of of T.R. Knight and his boyfriend Mark Cornelson out on the town the other day. T.R. looks awfully happy in this shot – maybe he’s feeling liberated now that he’s waved bye-bye to Grey’s Anatomy.
