Afternoon Greg: So many nice Bea Arthur tributes

It is so heartening, and a bit astonishing frankly, to read all of the tributes that are being written about Bea Arthur since she died Saturday at the age of 86. She had certainly touched a deep chord among so many people through he performances – particularly in the long-running and landmark shows Maude and in The Golden Girls.

I was particularly struck by a column Charles McNulty wrote for the Los Angeles Times where he points out that Miss Arthur’s television stardom did not come until she was past 50. So by that time, she had spent decades on and off-Broadway perfecting her masterful comedic timing.

He writes: “I can’t help thinking about the stage orgins of those unerring instincts for comedy, the hours upon hours of performing in theaters large and small that taught Arthur better than any videotape what worked and what didn’t.”

I don’t know about you, but the tributes are so nice to read because you realize how many others felt about Bea Arthur the same way you did and feel her loss the same way you do.
