Afternoon Greg: American Idol finale; Time for a March on Washington? Beck gets earful on The View
We’ll find out in just a few hours if Adam Lambert or Kris Allen is the winner of American Idol.
Either way, there seems to be no doubt that he will have a very successful career. But a lot of people out there – myself included – badly want him to win not only because he is deserving, but because he is gay.
I woke up a little earlier than usual this morning and started scanning Facebook and Twitter status updates and was astonished by the level of support for Adam posted right after the show aired last night through the morning.
One of the updates was from the openly gay Broadway star Nick Adams, a former Greg In Hollywood Morning Man, who wrote: “Given the social climate …. If Adam Lambert wins idol it will speak volumes about the state of our country… I think he should win regardless of his orientation… But how great that he’s gay!”
MARCHING ORDERS: I know I’m not alone in feeling really angry and frustrated about the continued implementation of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the dismissive nature the Obama administration is taking right now on repealing the Defense of Marriage Act.
That’s why I really like David Mixner’s idea of a March on Washington for LGBT equal rights. The author and activist wrote on DavidMixner.com today: “As this Administration sits in offices plotting timeline charts on what rights they feel comfortable granting us this year, clearly it is time for us to gin up our efforts and stop waiting for them to hand us our God given entitlements. Enough. I really can’t stomach any more being told ‘not now’. As nice as it would be, no one is going to give us our freedom; we are going to have to continue to fight like hell for it. It is demeaning to us to be moved around on a political chess board like freedom is a move in some game.
We have to stop it.
Let’s never forget that we are not talking about just another piece of legislation nor just an executive order. What is at stake is over 1,000 rights, benefits, privileges and protections granted to all other Americans and denied to the LGBT community.”
WHY DO PEOPLE LIE? This clip from The View is not of Earth-shattering importance but I post it because it is 1) very entertaining 2) It shows how some commentators, like Fox News’ Glenn Beck, completely make things up just to tell what they think is a good story.
Whoopi is pissed off and it’s fun to see her go after this guy (She at one point calls him “a lying sack of dog mess”) but I like Barbara Walters – a lady who is pushing 80 but clearly still at the top of her game – go after Beck with persistent questions about whether he ever bothers with getting the facts bedore he goes on the air and opens his mouth.
It’s something I often wonder about Bill O’Reilly and other conversative pundits. Okay, have your point of view, make your arguments and succeed or fail on the truth. I can honestly say I would have no use for a liberal commentator who made stuff up. What good would that be?
