After she kissed Cherry Jones at 2005 Tony Awards, Sarah Paulson got worried about her new TV job
Sarah Paulson wasn’t really thinking about outing herself back in 2005 when she kissed then-girlfriend Cherry Jones at The Tony Awards.
Jones was announced as the winner of best actress in a play for her performance as Sister Aloysius in Doubt and the pair, holding hands, shared a lengthy smooch that made if clear to television viewers they were more than friends.
‘I was just doing what one would do when a person they love has just won a big award,’ she tells NOTOFU Magazine.
‘What am I gonna do, pat her on the back and say, :Good job, dude?” It didn’t occur to me to do anything but what I did.’
Paulson has since gone on to be one of the stars of the American Horror Story anthology and got raves for her performance as prosecutor Marcia Clark in American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson.
But at the time of the Tony Awards kiss, she was not as well known and was just about to start work on the NBC series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip which was Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The West Wing.
During this time, Paulson now admits that she did worry some about how the kiss, which was widely noticed and written about, might impact her first high-profile TV gig.
But on the first day on the set, Sorkin made clear to Paulson that she would ‘never have anything to worry about.’
‘It was the biggest exhale of my life,’ she says. ‘I didn’t realize how anxious about it I had been until he said that.’
Paulson, who is bisexual, is now in another high-profile relationship – this time it’s with Emmy Award-winning actress Holland Taylor.
She’s more open about things this time.
‘I believe that everyone should be allowed to speak their truth and just say what they want to say and show the world who they are,’ she says.
‘You should be able to love whomever you fucking well please.’
