My tribute to Zsa Zsa Gabor who has died at 99
With all the health struggles she’s had in the past decade beginning with a 2002 car accident, it really is remarkable that Zsa Zsa Gabor loved to almost reach her 100th birthday which was just two months away. She died earlier today.
When I was a kid and I’d see her on The Merv Griffin Show or paying a visit to Dinah Shore I’d think she was the lady from Green Acres. Then one day she and her younger sister, Eva Gabor, appeared together with Merv and I realized there were two of them!
I thought they were such a hoot and loved their accents. I remember Zsa Zsa once took Merv on a tour of her giant closet and this little gay boy was just transfixed.
Zsa Zsa by that time was pretty much famous for being famous but I did remember seeing her in the creepy movie Picture Mommie Dead on TV. She became a star with the 1952 movie Moulin Rouge which ended up being one of her few leading roles.
She became much more of a personality and known for being married nine times. She married current husband Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt in 1986.
In 1989, she dominated headlines for a time after being accused of slapping the face of Beverly Hills police officer Paul Kramer when he stopped her for a traffic violation.
That was a hoot and gave her a whole new wave of celebrity. I’ve included a bunch of her talk show appearances and a hilarious bit she did with David Letterman that has them driving all around LA eating fast food.
