A must-see: NAACP Chairman Julian Bond’s extraordinary speech at the HRC gala
Sorry for the delay in getting this to you. Julian Bond’s speech at the HRC gala on Saturday night was one of tne most amazing that I’ve ever heard on LGBT rights. He touched on so many important points, had such intelligence and common sense, but also well-researched fact. The Biblical scriptures he takes on are of particular importance but he manages to do so with humor without being offensive. I scribbled down what I could but decided to wait for a transcript because I didn’t want to mess with such a powerful address. My favorite quote is this:
When someone asks me, “are gay rights civil rights?” my answer is always, “Of course, they are.” Civil rights are positive legal prerogatives: the right to equal treatment before the law. These are the rights shared by everyone. There is no one in the United States who does not, or should not, enjoy or share in enjoying these rights. Gay and lesbian rights are not special rights in any way. It isn’t “special” to be free from discrimination. It is an ordinary, universal entitlement of citizenship.
So here’s my advice, have this take up your entire computer screen, sit back at home or at your office, and watch. You’ll be damned glad you did. (Source: HRC Back Story)
